Two models have emerged from McWilliam’s work, one for early intervention in natural environments and one for classroom organization and teaching. The former has been known as the five-component model, the FACINATE model, the McWilliam model, the EINE model, and, with the publication of the eponymous book, routines-based early intervention (RBEI). Most recently, McWilliam has used Routines-Based Model (RBM) to describe both models together. Components of the model can be found in many states and local programs for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with disabilities and their families across the U.S. and in selected places overseas. The Routines-Based Interview (RBI) has been the practice most commonly implemented, with inclusion as a mandated or optional practice in many states for development of the individualized family service plan. In the past few years, McWilliam has worked with a number of entities not just to train practitioners but to engage in strategic planning, when they have indicated an interest in adopting the RBM. He has had deep or long-time engagement with the following entities.

Implementation Planning

McWilliam has developed a method for stakeholders, leadership teams, or implementation teams to develop a timeline for implementation of the Routines-Based Model. He facilitates implementation-planning meetings or coaches facilitators, via distance learning.
